Lightweight Concept Ford Fusion Loses Major Weight

Ford Motor Co., has announced a new concept vehicle that is 25% lighter than the current Ford Fusion model. Substituting previous model design materials with high-strength steel, aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber has helped the concept vehicle shed some serious weight. “This is a mid-sized sedan with the fuel efficiency of a very small car” commented Matt Zaluzec, Ford’s executive for Global materials and Manufacturing research. Furthermore, Ford has equipped the concept model with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine, which can get 45 miles per gallon. The suspension and braking systems lost 30% of their weight by using aluminum brake rotors with hollow steel springs and stabilizer bars. Extreme measures have been taken to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle – the powertrain lost 24% of its weight and the interior cabin lost 35% of its total weight.
